NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Sunday marked the 50th anniversary of the Pride Parade. But because of the coronavirus pandemic, for the first time, it was canceled.
Instead, virtual celebrations and a unity march were held.
Hundreds turned out in New York City to march in support of LGBTQ rights and against police brutality.

The crowd started in Foley Square and made its way to Washington Square Park. It was a final celebration of Pride Month, all while speaking out in support of their causes.
“There’s also a very important intersection between the Black community and the gay community because there are black, gay, queer, and trans people out there in the world that need to hear their voice, and so we just parlayed the two movements together,” Harlem resident Christopher Maxwell said.

“I had to come by and see this. This is like a really beautiful thing to see. People know that it’s at risk and they still come out anyway. It’s just very beautiful and I had to be a part of it,” added Kunle Martins of Lower Manhattan.

There was a brief altercation between police and some people who were gathering in Washington Square Park. Witnesses said police sprayed some people with pepper spray, but it’s unclear what caused that conflict.
The NYPD confirmed that the protests were mostly peaceful. It said three people sprayed graffiti on police cars. When officers attempted to arrested them the crowd stepped in and that’s when pepper spray was released. Those three people were arrested.
