10 Best Aloe Vera Gels, According to Dermatologists 2024

Research has shown that the antioxidants in aloe vera plant have skin-soothing and wound-healing properties to help ailments like sunburn, cuts, or burns feel better. Aloe vera has both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties so it’s a good ingredient to use not just for sunburns, but also for mild forms of dermatitis when the skin is inflamed and itchy, says Nicole Hayre, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in McLean, Virginia. “It generally has a nice soothing effect on the skin, [providing] some quick relief.”

“While aloe vera is known for after-sun care for the skin to hydrate, nourish and soothe the skin, it also is seen in lots of other skin care products for its many benefits,” adds Anna Chacon, MD, a dermatologist in Miami, Florida. “It is soothing, hydrating and helps with inflammation- perfect for those with stressed, irritated and sensitive skin, and can also help with skin texture, elasticity and redness.”

Aloe vera may also be helpful in reducing inflammation from other types of inflammatory skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, although it is not helpful at the same level as typical prescription medications for these conditions, says Kristina Collins, MD, a double board-certified dermatologist in Austin, Texas. “Overall, I think aloe vera is probably most useful as a skin soother when your skin is irritated in a minor way,” she says.
