Italy Digital Nomad Visa (for self-employed only) or Remote Worker Visa (for employees)
The Italian version of a digital nomad visa was was initially approved by the country’s legislature back in 2022, but it only went into practice in early 2024.
As well as the opportunity to live in a beautiful and historic country, a key attraction for potential digital nomads is the right to apply for the ‘simplified taxation system’, which would mean paying only 5% of income on a calculation base of only 70% of total income. (N.B. after 5 years, the rate rises to 15% of income).
It is only open to non-EU citizens (so that includes Brexit Britain) and can only be used by “highly qualified professionals” – defined as university graduates or workers with at least five years of professional experience with evidence of qualifications that are recognised within the ‘Elenco Professioni regolamentate e autorità competenti’. The type of work you do will also be checked (to conform to the ‘digital’ part of the nomad nomenclature).
Visa fee: €116 (as at 2024)
Length of visa: One year. It can be extended for one year at a time.
Requirements:
- Passport, valid for three more months after your visa expires, and a valid UK Residence Permit and UK eVisa share code (original and photocopy).
- Passport-style photo full front and white background and not older than 6 months.
- Health insurance for the entire length of your stay. Anecdotally, this requirement appears to be absolutely key to a successful application, so make sure your documentation for this is in full order.
- Documented evidence of accommodation for the length of your stay in Italy. In practice, this means a rental agreement registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate (the Italian Revenue agency) or proof of ownership (deeds to a property).
- Evidence of your work contract (and the company must be based outside Italy), or evidence of self-employment contracts of work if freelancing. Supporting documents such as official tax returns, P60s and payslips will be required.
- Clean criminal record for at least 5 years.
Minimum salary: “Triple the prevailing minimum amount level (€8,500.00)” – i.e.€26,500
